they attempted to rob us of the subway trains,
buffing our paint and our pain
off the sides of brains,
where we labored intensely,
spelling our names our own way,
trying to finally have our say,
cause i can't afford tv spots or billboard lots or radio talks,
but i can afford a can of paint,
so they lock that paint behind glass,
ask to see my i.d. and eye me warily.
they may have stolen our trains
but our hearts remain the same
and instead of dying out,
we are branching out like the rooster tree,
infecting every corner of this city,
so that everyone walking down the street
will have to see my name, my pain
and there are so many of us,
someone is going to have to listen,
as we rattle the bars of this prison.
